Why do companies refuse free advertising?

So some guy built furniture from FedEx boxes, and now he's getting sued for copyright and trademark infringement. Huh??

If they had any brains, they'd be paying this guy to appear in advertisements promoting how sturdy (and therefore protective) their shipping materials are.
